Why Birds are Living Dinosaurs with Dr. Fastovsky
Monday June 1 at 6pm

Learn how dinosaurs became what we know of as modern-day birds with Dr Fastovsky.
David E. Fastovsky, Ph.D., is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Rhode Island, where he taught paleontology, evolutionary biology, and Earth history for 37 years. His interest in dinosaurs began very early when he read about fossil finds in the Gobi Desert; he has since carried out geological and paleontological fieldwork all over the world. He served as Science Editor, spanning 12 years of professional journals of the Geological Society of America, and is a Fellow of both the GSA and of the Paleontological Society.  Fastovsky specializes in the Mesozoic environments in which non-bird dinosaurs roamed, as well as on their ultimate extinction, and has published well over 100 professional papers on these and other related topics.

Author Talk: Dr. Mari Nardillo Dias
Tuesday June 9 at 2:00 pm

For readers who cherish The Velveteen Rabbit and The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse —A Memory of Elephants is a tender journey through love that remains. A Memory of Elephants is a gentle, thoughtful story about grief, presence, and the voices we encounter when something important is lost.

Set in a quiet winter forest, a baby elephant walks alongside a memory of elephants while others gather nearby—watching, waiting, and offering different ways of responding. Some voices urge strength or speed. Others offer silence, companionship, and time. A small lantern glows, dims, and steadies, reflecting what grief often feels like from the inside.

Dr. D is a Rhode Island-based educator, thanatologist, as well as an active member of the Rhode Island Medical Reserve Corps: Trauma Response Team. In addition, she is Director of GracePointe Grief Center, and author of GriefSPEAK: Stories of Loss Volumes I and II, and A Memory of Elephants, a therapeutic resource designed to help adults support grieving children.
