RI 250 Penny University: Robert Geake
Wednesday May 6 at 6:00 pm

Join us as author and historian Robert A. Geake chronicles the history of the First Rhode Island Regiment. Known as the “Black Regiment,” it included formerly enslaved men, indentured servants, and Narragansett soldiers. Despite controversy, the regiment fought with distinction at the Battle of Rhode Island and later, after joining the 2nd Rhode Island before the Siege of Yorktown in 1781, became the nation’s first integrated battalion. Historian Robert A. Geake tells this powerful story in From Slaves to Soldiers: The 1st Rhode Island Regiment in the American Revolution.
